The Waiting Game
Since the 12th day of
December, Tony and I have been playing the waiting the game; actually, truth be
told, we’ve been playing the waiting game much longer. We waited to get
pregnant, we waited for our babies to reach a certain point before we announced
the pregnancy, we waited to see them and their progress at each sonogram
appointment, we waited, with baited breath, when we found out Harper had a choroid
plexus cyst (something that went away by itself before birth). When I was told
I had to go on hospital bed rest, the waiting game really began- day by day we
waited to see if the babies would be born, or spend one more precious day
growing. On the twins’ birthday, the game was taken to an all-new level and Tony
and I were put through some of the toughest waiting periods in our life- among
them the wait to hear if our babies would cry as they emerged from the womb. We
waited for both kids to gain enough weight to wear clothes, and to move to a
bassinet, and to get to take a bath. We also waited for the twins to wean off
of oxygen (remember, the long wait with Harper on that one?) Then we waited for them to learn to take
bottles- Jack’s wait was lengthened by a day when he missed a bottle and set
his homecoming date back. We waited to bring Jack home and now that he’s home,
we wait on a daily basis: for him to fall asleep, for him to wake up, for him
to eat- the waiting is not done simply because he is inside our four walls. So,
when we are called to wait Sister out- to be still and wait for her to learn
what she needs to- Tony and I are struck by the desire to call out “I am tired of
waiting”, and we are tired. But, we know that good things come to those who
wait- so we keep on. Today the kids are 9 weeks old and I am awed by how much
the waiting has paid off; something must be working. So, in the waiting interim,
please pray for us- please pray that we can wait and not grow weary for we “…also
glory in our suffering, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character hope” (Romans 5: 3-4).
