A Good Day

Today was a good day. Everyday with these kids is a good day- but today was a legitimately good day.  We walked in the NICU this morning to find something we weren’t expecting yet- Jack is now in an open bassinet!  This open bassinet means a few things: 1. Jack now weighs 1800 grams 2. Jack is doing a good job regulating his own body temperature. These are two things that show us that Jack is growing and getting bigger and stronger.  Along with getting bigger and stronger, the open bassinet also means that Jack gets to be held by his grandparents. Mimi and Nana were both surprised to see Jack and even happier to get to hold him. The other great milestone for Jack today was his first bottle. I got to feed him and watch him try something new for the first time- so cool. It was a good day for Mr. Jack.

Miss Harper also had a great day. When I got there this morning, she was “cueing” (alert and acting like she was hungry). I haven’t tried to nurse Harper in a couple of days and she didn’t seem too interested last time I tried, so I didn’t have high hopes as we started the process.  However, Harper proved her mom wrong. She did great nursing! It took her a little while to latch on, but when she did, she was an even better eater than her brother. I was really impressed with how long she nursed and that she did such a great job staying alert and awake and keeping her breathing steady and her heart rate high while she did so. Harper still had a couple of Bradys when she was done nursing, but we worked with the nurses on ways to position her to minimize the Bradys. By the time Pop came to see Harper, she was doing well and she was in good spirits when we left. It was nice to have a good day after the bumpy road yesterday, that’s for sure.
