Roomies

The nurse surprised us today when we went in to see the kids by asking us if we’d given any thought to letting Jack and Harper room together. Tony and I agreed that if they would let the kids bunk together, we wanted it. So, today Harper got a new roomie. We moved Jack into Harper’s bay because it has windows that lets some sunlight in (something Jack has never seen before) and the bay is a little bit bigger so both Tony and I can sit and feed the kids together.

We also found out both the kids are doing much better on their eating. Jack is working on finishing a majority of his feeds by bottle and Harper is working on completing her bottle feeds. Jack finished a bottle for the nurse today, one for me, and one for Tony. The nurse practitioner said if Jack kept this up, he might be coming home this week! This is an exciting and terrifying thought all at once. Debbie and I spent the rest of the evening doing things to prepare for the babies to come home. I’m sure Harper won’t be far behind Jack when he does come home.

The last thing the new roommates did today was a newborn hearing screen. For this hearing screen, there were electrodes put on the baby’s head and shoulders and special headphones are put on the baby. The electrodes are hooked up to a computer and the computer emits a noise and then measures the baby’s brain waves. The test is either pass/fail, not a percentage. Jack passed his test, no problems. Harper passed her test in her left ear, no problem, but had a problem passing the test in her right ear. She will retake her test again, possibly Friday, to see if she can pass it. The nurse practitioner assured us that we should not worry about Harper’s right ear yet; she did hear sounds from her right ear and had a brainwave reaction, but did not have a strong enough reaction to hit the “pass” section. We were told that she may still have some fluid left in her ear and most preemies out grow this as they get closer to their due date. We’re going to be vigilant about checking on this as she grows.

So, that’s it for tonight- two kiddos who are sharing a room for the very first time, and two kiddos who are both getting ready to come home, hopefully in the next 5-14 days. We shall see; prayers are appreciated!
