18 Month Check Up

I have to start out this post by saying that my husband, the self-proclamied "chief worrier" in our house was not looking forward to this pediatrician visit. We have not have great luck with doctor visits in the past. If you'll recall, our "well-visits" have resulted in a "failure to thrive" diagnosis, talks of helmets, hydrocephalus, occupational therapy, referrals to all sorts of specialists, and shock treatment for Harper's eating problems. So, to say that Tony was holding his breath when we went on Wednesday would be an understatement.

Oh, it's also worth a mention that Miss Harper fed herself yogurt for breakfast Wednesday morning and was so proud of herself, but also prompted an impromptu bath- too cute!

Here are the stats on the kids and where they shake out on their growth curves:

Jack (on the full-term growth curve):

Height: 32 1/2 inches- 84%
Weight: 21lbs 8oz- 26%
Head: 19 inches- 84%

He's a tall skinny boy. The doctor said his weight seems to have plateaued a little bit, but she thinks it will pick up now that his teeth are coming in (he had 2 a month ago, now he has 6...4 of which haven't dropped all the way yet).

Harper (still on the preemie growth chart)

Height: 30 1/2 inches- 38%
Weight: 17lbs 10oz- 5%
Head: 19 inches- 96%

The two biggest gifts about Harper's stats are 1) Her head was in the 98th percentile and now it's in the 96th- no more concern for hydrocephalus, woo hoo! 2) Her weight growth looks good- still a low percentile, but she's growing and that's great!

The pediatrician wasn't concerned about anything with either of the kiddos. In fact, the doctor looked at Harper's head shape and said "I would definitely not recommend a helmet for her; her head looks great!" Hearing that was a sigh of relief for both Tony and myself. I prayed months ago, "Lord, if we need a helmet for Harper, please push us in that direction, or please slam that door and take that worry off my mind." God took that worry off my mind, and I'm glad I trusted Him to help guide us.

When we left the doctor's office, all four of us were smiling and we booked appointments for January of 2015, when these little ones will be two years old! I really like our pediatrician, but I hope we can stay out of the doctor's office until then!

After the doctor, the kids and I went to Nana and Pop's house to see Granny, Kerry, Wyatt, and Sloane. The kids had a fabulous time running around with their cousins and playing. Here are some pictures of the mischief they got into; I'm so thankful my kids have cousins to grow up with.

I thought it would be overwhelming to put all our 4th of July pictures in with this post, so stay tuned tomorrow for the recap!

  1. Wow! That is such good news! I kinda can relate to Tony's worry when you had to take the kids to their 18th-month check up, what with all the series of visits that resulted to a couple of alarming diagnoses. I'm just glad that all of that is gone now, and that Harper is perfectly healthy and hydrocephalus-concern free. Congratulations! All the best to you and your family! :)
